Cutting your energy bill with defrost and setpoint settings

Some refrigeration savings need no new equipment at all. The right setpoint, the right defrost and the right control settings give you more stable cooling from your existing system with less energy.

In short: At many sites, settings are made at the first commissioning and stay the same for years. But products, usage and seasons change. Updating settings to match real demand is the fastest way to save without investing.

6 areas where settings alone save energy

01
Set the setpoint for the productA setpoint lower than needed means the system works harder for nothing. Every product has a different safe storage range; the setpoint should sit within that range without being unnecessarily low.
02
Get the differential rightToo narrow a temperature differential makes the compressor short-cycle. That costs both energy and equipment life.
03
Tie defrost to demand, not the clockFixed-time defrost runs the heater even when there's no ice. Defrost that terminates on temperature and is scheduled around how busy the room is cuts unnecessary heat load.
04
Set the post-defrost fan delayDrip time and fan delay stop melted water being blown onto the product and warm air being pushed into the room.
05
Floating suction and condensing pressureIn central systems, letting suction and condensing pressures float with demand and outdoor temperature, instead of holding them fixed, noticeably lightens the load on the compressors.
06
Night mode and blindsIn supermarkets, night blinds and a setpoint for closed hours cut consumption without compromising food safety.

Measure first, then adjust

The only way to know how much difference a setting makes is to measure it. Energy monitoring by room and by unit lets you compare consumption before and after a change. That turns savings from an estimate into a result you can report.
